Ortho K Corneal Molding

Get perfect vision while you sleep!

One of the most common questions we receive is, "How can I keep my child's eyes from getting worse?" Ortho K Corneal Molding is one of the most effective ways of slowing down, or stopping vision from changing every year.  Corneal Molding is a non-surgical procedure, using specially designed contact lenses to gently reshape the curvature of the eye to improve vision.  The lenses are only worn during sleep. As long as the lenses are worn at night, you will have clear vision that lasts all day, without using glasses or contacts.  Think of it like using invisalign retainers, but for your eyes.

Myopia (Nearsightedness) is advancing more rapidly in today's children, than it has in previous generations. In the 1970's, 25% of Americans were myopic. Now, we are closer to 42% in the United States.  Myopia is even more prevalent in Asia, where approx 80% of the population is myopic.  This increase in myopia, carries with it an increase in the risk for eye disease, such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal detachments, later in life.

Is this a new treatment?

Reshaping the cornea with contact lenses has been done for several decades, but received FDA approval in 2002.  As technology has improved, we are able to be more precise with the treatment, and are able to correct more difficult prescriptions.

Is Corneal Molding Safe?

Corneal Molding has a proven track record of being a very safe procedure.  Any contact lens use has a small amount of risk and lens hygiene is always important to minimize that risk.  A recent study was published, showing minimal risk for corneal molding.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4697954/

Is the Treament Permanent?

One of the advantages of Corneal Molding, is that it is adjustable and reversible.  As long as the molds are worn at night, the vision will be corrected in the morning.  If you stop wearing the molds, the eyes will return to the shape they were when the treatment was started.

Does this work for adults?

Yes.  Corneal molding is a great option for patients who aren't comfortable with surgical vision correction, but still don't want to wear glasses or contacts during the day.
